Top Ten Economical Cars

A list of the top ten most economical cars available to the British consumer will invariably always contain the now world famous Toyota Prius, the first mainstream eco car to gain popular appeal. But a list of top ten will probably always be ever changing as car manufacturers are increasingly introducing cars returning more than 80 mpg and with CO2 emissions below 100g/km.

Consumers are finding that buying a fuel efficient car is important not only due to the record high fuel prices but also because good fuel economy means low CO2 emissions. And since car taxation is based on CO2, a fuel efficient car also means low or no road tax and no London Congestion Charge.

A top ten of the most economical cars on the British market would include cars such as the Smart Fortwo cdi as well as the aforementioned Toyota Prius and its sister, Toyota Auris Hybrid. The Smart delivers 85.6 mpg while the Prius gives you 72.4 mpg and the Auris 74.3. Another impressive performer is the Skoda Fabia Greenline which emits 89g/km of CO2 and averages 83.1 mpg.

Further down the top ten list you have cars such as the Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion, the Seat Ibiza Ecomotive, the Vauxhall Corsa 1.3 CDTi Stop/Start and two offerings from Fiat, the Fiat 500 0.9 TwinAir and the Fiat Punto Evo 1.3 MultiJet. The most interesting car on the top ten list however, is probably the Lexus CT 200h which is the UK?s first premium hatch hybrid. Average fuel economy is 69 mpg and it emits 94g/km of CO2. The petrol-electric drivetrain is of course derived from the Toyota Prius. To test out this new Lexus, Belfast is one city where you will find a dealership.
