Drug Driving

We constantly hear about the perils of drink driving. The hard hitting campaigns which have been evident for many years have become imprinted in many people?s brains. Of course there are still some selfish people who choose to ignore the warning but for the most, it is not even a consideration. However the regulations on drug driving are somewhat woolly! There is no such thing as drugalysers but if campaigners have their way, this could be the next step to making our roads even safer.

Currently there is no hard and fast law about driving with drugs in your system. It is only an offence if it can be proved that the drugs have impaired your driving, otherwise people can dive with Cannabis and Coke in their system but not actually be breaking the law. It sound outrageous. But now the Department of Transport is looking at ways to tackle the menace of drug driving.

A panel is being set up to consider how different drugs and indeed different combination of drugs can impair driving a New Toyota car. It will also look at how drinking and drugs together effect different people. A spokesperson from road safety group, Brake said they wanted to see a total ban on drug driving and indeed a similar test to breathalysers to bring users to justice.

The panel will also consider how legally obtained drugs could have an effect on drivers ability.

A recent survey suggested that 11 per cent of motorists aged between 17 and 24 had driven whilst using drugs in the last year!
